The 32nd National Road Safety week has already commenced, the theme for which is “Save yourself to save your family” and it aims to make roads, streets and transport much safer for the people. The event is usually observed for a week and includes various agendas. During this event, the police forces make us aware of the rules and regulations that one must follow while on the road like how one can avoid accidents and injuries, how to drive safer and furthermore conducts various meetings, seminars, workshops for the same.
In addition to this, you can also witness various events and activities organised by HOAI (Highway Operator Association of India), NHAI, NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited).
One can also learn about Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill of 2019, traffic rules and regulations set by the government through pamphlets and brochures.
Not just that, the government also awards best performing states, UTs, good samaritans for their contribution towards road safety.
Due to various road fatalities and accidents, the government of India introduced this initiative and is striving to make Indian roads, accident-free zone. Though, we haven’t achieved a greater number, here are some statistics that might help you understand the situation more and compare the fluctuation.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the no. of people who died in car crashes in 2016 was 1.50 lakh and the numbers decreased to 1.47 lakh in 2017 but fluctuated back to 1.49 in 2018.
